I hope you and your family fared well during this storm. It hurts to know that all of you have been impacted by Harvey in some degree.
In regards to what the Chapter is doing, we will look to plan service projects in the weeks and months to come. Please refer to the weekly emails and the website for updates.
One of the first events is a donation drive at our UT vs. Maryland game watching at the Square at Memorial City. The venue will need help in collecting the items and transporting it to local shelters. On that note, you hear about people trying to get back to a sense of “normalcy.” We hope that you come to our game watching venue at Atlas Pub and our Family Friendly venue at Memorial City for a 3-4 hour distraction to cheer on your Longhorns.
Please note that we do not have a location here in Houston, as we only have a PO Box. Therefore, we are not in a position to accept donations. There are many other wonderful organizations, such as Red Cross & BakerRipley, that would gladly accept those donations.
To our friends & fellow alumni at other chapters across the state, country and world, thank you for your thoughts and prayers, as well as requests on how you can help. There was recently an email sent out by the Texas Exes organization that discussed ways for the overall Texas Exes community to help. Please contact email@example.com about how you can help.
In addition, the vast majority of you have a friend & classmate that is in Houston area, as well as the 50+ counties that have been affected along the Gulf Coast. I think that one of the most meaningful things to do is call/email them to see how they’re doing. Also, something as easy as bringing up a story with them about your UT days (even if it might be a little embarrassing) will go a long way.
President – Texas Exes Houston Chapter
Texas Exes membership is ideal for alumni/friends who want to stay connected to UT, access the Texas Exes member network, and ensure their voice is heard in support of their alma mater. There’s no better way to show pride with purpose.
Only membership in the Texas Exes keeps you closely connected to your alma mater and other alumni through The Alcalde member-magazine, networking opportunities, and access to the online UT Library System. What’s more, if you join as a Life Member then 90% of your membership dues are placed in a permanent endowment that continually supports the many programs – like Camp Texas, student scholarships, community engagement, and advocacy on behalf of UT – that radically shape experiences and improve lives. Unlike shirts that fade and games that end, a membership in the Texas Exes positively impacts you, the University, and the Longhorn faithful. And that’s something you can feel good about.
* Texas Exes membership dues are 80% tax deductible. JOIN TODAY at www.texasexes.org!
